Meet Allison Mullin, Acting Manager of Communications and Marketing

When I first came to the OLC in 2009 as the Communications and Marketing Coordinator, I knew little about the adult literacy field in Ontario. In my previous roles, including working in the communication and marketing departments at Mount Sinai Hospital and the City of Calgary, adult literacy was not on my radar; however, I realize now it should have been.

I was shocked to learn the statistics around adult literacy in the province when I came to OLC. Since then, my knowlege on the subject has grown exponentially and I’m more committed than ever in raising the profile of both literacy and essential skills and the great work OLC does to a wider audience.

As Acting Manager of Communications and Marketing, I oversee a variety of areas: OLC’s online presence, including our website and social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, and our blog), responding to membership inquiries, managing and promoting events, communicating a strategic vision for the OLC’s future and much more.

I look forward to working with OLC’s stakeholders more actively in my role and I’m always available for feedback, ideas, help with social media or promoting an event, or just a chat: email me at allison@on.literacy.ca.

Road Trip! OLC is blogging its way through Ontario!

Map of OntarioFollow OLC over December and January as they visit dynamic literacy programs across Ontario to showcase “Agents of Change” in the literacy field.

Six literacy programs from varying geographical locations and sectors were selected through an application process to participate in an exciting and unique learning model – the first of its kind in the literacy field. The OLC developed this model to ensure learning continues and translates into action after the Spotlight on Learning: Becoming Agents of Change conference ends.

OLC’s road trip will highlight all the amazing work these programs are doing to increase the literacy and essential skills of Ontarians: stories, videos, photos and much more will be available on OLC’s brand new Spotlight on Learning website, launching at the end of January, 2011.

Within this model, participants had the opportunity to map learning objectives they felt important to their program and organization. To facilitate continued learning and change initiatives, programs participate in focused discussion, follow-up and resource sharing.

The lucky road trippers? Allison Mullin, OLC’s Communications and Marketing Coordinator, and Vijaya Chikermane, OLC’s Knowledge Exchange Coordinator. During their visits to these sites, they will be blogging and updating live via Twitter and Facebook about where they are, what they’re doing and all the great things they’re learning.

Follow them as they blog their way through Ontario and showcase Agents of Change in the literacy field!

Meet Elizabeth Chen, Project Coordinator

I am very pleased to join the OLC as a Project Coordinator, to assist in the growing portfolio of initiatives designed to increase literacy in Ontario.  I will be helping plan and manage the OLC’s diverse research, resource and development initiatives.  Our primary focus is to provide effective and timely support in the development and implementation of projects that will support people with literacy challenges and deliverers of literacy programs, decision-makers and the general public.  This will include coordinating the portfolio, providing administrative support,  answering queries and requests for information, stakeholder relations, budget tracking, and other tasks that will facilitate literacy efforts in the province.

Previous to working at the Ontario Literacy Coalition, I worked in private sector at The Globe and Mail Online and Northwater Capital Management, in government, and most recently in social services including CUSO-VSO, UNICEF, and St. Stephen’s Community House.  My fifteen years of project management experience will help OLC to remain organized and effective as our project portfolio and clientele grow.  Personally, I look forward to serving people like my parents who were unable to advance at the workplace and in society due to limited literacy.

Meet Jody Lundrigan, Manager of Communications and Marketing

Since joining OLC and entering the literacy field in May 2007, it has been a tremendous privilege to work and support a cause as fundamentally important as literacy and lifelong learning.

It has been a luxury to work with the phenomenal OLC team. And it has been my extreme pleasure to get to know the many wonderful and dedicated literacy professionals in the province of Ontario and across Canada.

As Manager of Communications and Marketing, I manage a vibrant team, whose mantra is internal continuous learning. Our team reaches out to the literacy field as well as a multitude of community stakeholders, and brings to life an online literacy community through social media.

I think we are raising the profile of literacy and essential skills in this province. I hope you agree.

The Communications and Marketing department is a fast-paced, responsive, thought-provoking and information-sharing team connecting with the field through digital communications, responding to membership queries, developing sponsorship strategies, managing events, answering media inquiries and thinking strategically about OLC and the literacy field in Ontario – and beyond.

Do you know someone with whom we should connect? How can we help you promote your program, organization or event? How can we spread the word about OLC and the great things being done in the literacy and essential skills field?

We are always looking for feedback so Facebook us, send us a Tweet, comment right here on the blog or drop us a line at olc@on.literacy.ca.

The best thing about working at OLC, and in literacy, is that these people practice what they preach. Not only does this field promote lifelong learning, it practices it as well.

Meet Urszula Mazur, Administrative Coordinator

Committed to the Ontario Literacy Coalition’s mission, I have been working as the Administrative Coordinator for over 14 years. I provide general administrative support related to various initiatives and projects undertaken by the OLC and the Executive Director.

Additionally, I am the organizer and contact for varied internal and external meetings (eg. board, committees). I assist the ED with communiqués to the Board of Directos in regards to the OLC AGM and other governance items. I manage all aspects of OLC publications including processing orders, ensure compliance with the OLC copyright policy and respond to requests for permission to reprint. I have been involved in the development and implementation of policies, processes and procedures related to office management.

I brought to the OLC experience gained at the number of insurance companies, access data services and press publishing company.

Meet Director of Finance and Administration Susanne Smith

I have been with the Ontario Literacy Coalition since November 2005. Currently, I am the Director of Finance and Administration and am responsible for managing the financial and administrative operations as well as some aspects of human resources. I manage one part-time assistant who works closely with me.

I have worked in finance and human resources in both the private and not-for-profit sectors for over 35 years and bring all of that experience to the OLC. I look forward to the continuing challenges of my position for years to come.

I am a learner for life and an amateur photographer.
